Dear parents,
In today’s English class, our little ones had an immersive reading experience with the picture book 🐭 Maisy’s Chinese New Year! They followed Maisy to clean the house, shop for New Year supplies, gather with good friends for a delicious reunion meal, exchange lucky red packets, listen to Tiger tell the story of the Chinese zodiac, watch fireworks light up the night sky, and join in the lively parade and dragon dance to pray for blessings. They truly felt the joy and excitement of Chinese New Year 🧨!
Here’s a recap of what we learned today—please take a look!
🏮 With guidance, the kids can recognize and say 8-10 New Year-related words (such as Chinese New Year, lucky red packet, fireworks, dragon dance, parade, dumpling, market, decorations), and understand the meaning of “red is a lucky color”. They can retell simple plot points from the picture book (e.g., “Maisy goes to the market to buy new clothes” “has a reunion dinner with friends”) and, with prompts, use simple sentence patterns like “I see…” and “We can… during Chinese New Year” to describe scenes.
🏮 The children also learned about New Year customs: sweeping and tidying the house, visiting the market, having a feast, receiving lucky red packets, watching fireworks, and performing the dragon dance—all traditional Spring Festival activities.
🏮 Through fun games like word matching, the kids can name 5-6 zodiac animals (such as rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, pig, dog) and gained a basic understanding of the “Chinese zodiac”.
🎆 Through this picture book, they learned about the unique charm of Chinese New Year, deepened their connection with traditional culture, and showed great enthusiasm for participating in New Year-themed group activities!
