In today’s PBL, the children learned about the Lunar New Year, the Chinese zodiac and the traditional tale, The Great Race. After listening to the story, the children placed each zodiac animal in their appropriate race finishing positions whilst using ordinal numbers.
In phonics, the children learned the letter Vv. They identified the letter in upper and lowercase, learned vocabulary beginning with the letter and used the letter’s sound to blend unfamiliar words.
In STEM class, the children reviewed their recent learning about magnets and farm animals. They placed animals in appropriate places on a farm such as the pond, pasture or barn and using magnets, the children revisited which materials are attracted to magnets and which are not.
In Chinese class, the children completed an I Spy & Count activity by observing a cluster of Lunar New Year related objects such as lanterns, dragons and red envelopes. They counted how many of each item there were and selected an appropriate numeral sticker to match the quantity on a tally sheet.
今天中文数学课上，我们首先一起聊了聊春节，孩子们想到了好多过年时会见到的东西，如红红的灯笼、甜甜的糖果、热闹的鞭炮，还有压岁红包和吉祥的橘子等。接着，每个孩子收到一张满是这些春节物品的纸，不过它们全都混在一起。孩子们的任务就是当个整理小能手：先把一样的东西圈出来，然后认真数清楚每样有多少个，最后把数字写下来（或者数字贴纸代替）。整个活动既锻炼孩子们的观察能力，又练习她们得20以内点数能力，并尝试用数字记录。今天得数学课与我们的节日生活紧紧联系在一起，孩子们在认识春节习俗的同时，也开心地巩固了点数、书写等新本领。大家都动手又动脑，完成得很棒！
